When it comes to getting full value for your craps budget, sticking to one simple bet is the key to giving yourself the best chance at walking away a winner. As is often the case for any casino game, the higher payoff odds bets offer the worst value.

Casino Game Craps

Craps has enough excitement you don’t need to chase one big payoff to have a shot at some serious money.

The easiest bet to learn and to play from a favorable odds standpoint are the pass line and don’t pass line.  I will avoid rehashing the rules of the game as they are easy to find.  In a casino you can ask the dealers at the table and they will be glad to help you.  Online, every casino will explain these basic bets in detail.

Keep things simple for your first experience at the game of craps by sticking to pass line bets.  These bets often take some time to determine a winner, making what small edge you give to the house stretch even further.  On average a table in a traditional casino sees about 50 decisions on the pass line bet each hour.  If you make only $5 pass line bets this means you should expect to lose about $3.50 per hour.  Not bad for some excitement wouldn't you say?

The odds' bet is an additional bet you can make to augment your pass line bets and are paid at true odds.  The house has no edge on these bets, making it among the best bets available in casinos.   Dealers almost always encourage you to place these bets.  Be sure you do so.

Adjust your original bets to take into account your odds' bet, making your total bet about the same amount as your money management plan suggests.  In other words if your normal bet size is $15 or $20, make a $5 line bet and then place a $10 or $15 odds bet.

The odds’ bet lowers house edge on your total wager to less than one percent.  Most casinos offer at least “double” odds, meaning you can bet up to twice as much as your original line bet.  A few casinos offer up to 100 times odds, but beyond 10 times odds it means little except for high rollers.

Once past five times odds most players start requiring impractical changes such as betting less the table minimum.  Unless you are playing on a table with a small minimum bet, don't worry about the level of odds offered as long as you get  triple odds or better, which can be found in most casinos today.

The difference between no odds and triple odds reduces the house edge against you by over one percent; the difference between triple and 10 times odds is only about 0.2 percent.  So  remember the key to giving the house only a slight edge on you is to size your bets properly so you can take advantage of the best game on the floor at a bargain price.

This is all you need to learn to have fun at craps.  Is the game really so mesmerizing and scary now?  The numerous other bets will be covered in future articles, but this simple primer is all you need to start.  You can now walk up to a table or log in online and experience the excitement for yourself.

Others players at the table with you will place numerous other bets, but wait until you get accustomed to the pace of the game before branching out further.  For now just get into the game and enjoy its highs and lows for a relatively low cost.
